Title: A True Christian Gentleman - a man of faith, Chief Luthuli
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008110408:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1961 - The Kind Of South Africa I Want. A True Christian Gentleman - a man of faith, Chief Lutuli practises Christianity in his ordinary daily life. Chief Lutuli said "The main thing is that the Government and the people should be democratic to the core. It is relatively unimportant who is in the Government. I am not opposed to any government because it is White. I am only opposed to one which is undemocratic. I do not like such expressions as " the All-Black Government," the African majority." I like to speak about " a democratic majority," which should be a non-racial majority, and could be multi-racial or not." (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008110410:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JAN 1962 - From Exile To A Few Days In Europe. the scene moves from Durban to the Rand Airport, Chief waves a goodbye, that night he is back at Jan Smuts, off to Oslo next day. It was a bit of a mix-up. After driving in style to Durban airport - in the same convertible Mr. Macmillan used - and greeting thousands of well-wishers, Mr. Lutuli was not permitted to address the crowd waiting for him at Jan Smuts Airport. And then the plane had to come back and the Lutuli's spent the night at the airport where you couldn't get to see them. But next day they said their goodbyes at last. Title: Welcome To Luthuli!
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008110417:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JUN 1959 - Welcome To Luthuli! - Inside the biggest meeting of the tour. It's a good job Cape Town halls are built strong, otherwise they might have burst with crowds that went to hear the Chief. Our cameraman juggled his elbows to get his camera ready for a chance to click this photograph of all-race crowd that thronged the Drill Hall. While Luthuli talked, nobody moved. "Africa!" they roard at the end. "SOMLANDELA LUTHULI!" - These Xhosa words mean "We will follow Luthuli!" They were sung loudly and often by thousands and thousands of people in Cape Town recently during a triumphant visit by Chief Albert Luthuli, President-General Of the African National Congress. Description: DM2008110419:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JUN 1959 - Welcome To Luthuli! - Luthuli talks to White Crowd. Non-political whites turned up in hundreds to see Luthuli, hear his views at the multi-race meeting. "I think it could only happen in the Cape," said Luthuli. The Whites in the audience looked a little surprised and even startled - at the singing and shouting that began and ended the meeting. But they listened to the Chief's long and closely-thought-out speech with wrapt attention. No one barracked or interrupted, and no one asked any unfriendly questions. At the end one white man got up to congratulate Luthuli on the dignity and sincerity with which he had spoken. (Photograph by Cloete Breytenbach BAHA)

Description: DM2008110501:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:GCP OCT25 - Two Women Inspired A Great Man - Fighter Chief Luthuli with Oliver Tambo at an A.N.C. protest meeting before the ban. Two women have played a major part in Albert Luthuli's life - his mother and his wife. Though she did not live to see him installed as chief, from the days of his early childhood his mother used to boast: "My son will lead my people one day." Albert John Luthuli was born in Solusi, near Bulawayo, in 1898. His father, John Bunyan Luthuli, had gone to Rhodesia as an interpreter during the Matabele Rebellion and stayed on to do missionary work for the Seventh Day Adventists. It was one of the stormiest conferences for many a day. Tempers flared, sticks were brandished. But it was not violence which made the drama. The high moment, the real tension came with the decision of the Africanists to split from the Transvaal Congress. For long months the Africanists, the nationalist wing of Congress, has been organising a 'putsch' to oust the Freedom Chartership of the ANC in the Province. This is to be the first step towards grabbing control of the national executive. Chief Luthuli announces that the conference will go into closed session, for there is some necessary business to be done. Sunday November 2, not an Africanist in spitting distance. A New Transvaal Executive Committee was elected. The New Executive is: G.T.Sibanda, president (old); James Radebe, secretary (new); E.P. M
