Title: Man, Highlife Is Getting Crazier Still
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DRUM JAN 1959 MAN, HIGHLIFE IS GETTING CRAZIER STILLNIGED:SOCIAL:ENTERTAINMENT:MUSIC:JAN 1959 Man, Highlife Is Getting Crazier Still Lagos lads and lassies do the no-motions-barred Tcha-Tcha-Tcha.. They call it Highlife, reaching for stars. ’My customers dance anything from blues to the ukulele Hawaiian. But their latest craze is Tcha-Tcha-Tcha,“ a Lagos night club proprietor told us as we were wandering around to find out how the people enjoy themselves. And he wasn't exaggerating when he called the Tcha a craze, for, on the dance floor, were boys and girls some rolling on the ground, some reeling like wounded things, and some falling backwards and forwards all answering the call of the Tcha-Tcha-Tcha. This was crazy Highlife getting crazier, madder, loonier, bursting at the seams with abandon. ( Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2011060157:NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:MAY 1962 – Great Men Came To The Conference Of Destiny –Foreign Minister Jaja Wachukwu danced with wild abandon at one of the parties.”This man is quite a jack-of-all-trades. He was a good lawyer when in practice, as far as I know, he’s a good foreign minister. Tonight, he has also proved himself a first-rate dancer. The man has many possibilities, indeed.”The Conference of Heads of African and Malagasy States, which was held in Lagos, Nigeria, at the beginning of the year, saw some encouraging evidence of a continental unity based on the awareness of common problems, and the necessity to fight them with weapons of inter-continental co-operation and friendship. Also why they sang with such gusto and pep was because they recognised full well the part he had played in helping a Musicians Union to be born. Helluva tough birth too. Description: DM2000021417:SAED:MUSIC:THEATRE:JUN1967 - Simon Nkabinde, Juliet, Faith, Manxola, Windy Sibeko and Julia Yendel. Not a day passes without the Mahotella Sisters being heard on the radio. A Soweto party without the sexy troup's records being played, is unthinkable. But to most people the 'sister's are faceless voices. Drum joined Juliet and her colleaguesin their recording studio and on the township platform just to see what being a recording idol means. Any five year old kid in the townships knows, or has heard of Mahlathini, whose propper name is Simon Nkabinde. This rotund, gravel-voiced lad from Orlando East has sent Mbaqanga fans into frenzies with his famous 'Sithunyiwe' and' Uyawuzwa Umoya' - two records that are selling like hot cakes. He is the only man in this group. Backing them are Marks Mankwane, on lead guitar, Wilfred Mosebi, drums, Joseph Makwela, bass guitar, and Vivian Ngubeni, rythm guitar. The first show we went to was a perfomance for schoo

Is it normal for a salaried phamicist with three years' training to quit his job in preference to making dance music? No, sir. But E.T had to do it, to make up a great challenge. And the great fame that he's been able achieve has been through sweat and sometimes tears. When he puts his horn to his lips, the frenzied girls give him encouragement by shouting , "Blow, blow, E.T., blow!" (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA) Ghana

So it is important occasionaly to explore the things which made our forefathers such a strong, stable people. One way of finding out these things is just to watch our people doing the things that mean a lot to them. Drum went to Kumawu to see Nana Otau Acheampong celebrating his Papaye Festival.
