Description: SAED:SOCIAL:PERSONALITY: DRUM MARCH 1953 HOUSEWIFE Visitors call on Sunday afternoon, and Rose entertains her husband's boxing colleagues. Guests are (I. to r.) Nurse Sophie Ntesele, Springs promoter L. Zwane, Miss Eva Matsaba, and boxer Nic Sibeko. Tomorrow she will be up at 6.0, for a hard day. While men go out into the world for fame and fortune, Africa's women are working, quietly and modestly, keeping the home and family. All over Africa, in every village and township, women are fighting their lonely battle against the ever-growing trials of keeping house. 32-Year old Rose Rachel Thlopane is one of them and here Drum takes you into her home. DonÕt think IÕm sissy because IÕm pushing Jepu-thatÕs my sister VeronicaÕs pram. The photograph was all a mistake and me being naughty! Me IÕm the terrificest little boyo in South Africa. IÕm Jake NtuliÕs little bit. That is why, IÕm a bit annoyed with Jake, though heÕs my proud father. He left us too long ago. Me and my bigger sister Veronica and Mummy. November last year, when he writes a letter he says: ÔLove and kisses to you and the kids.ÕÕ We told mummy to tell Daddy to quit this business of sending us his love and kisses by air mail. We want him in person. When your Dad writes and says heÕs bought you a house in England, man, thatÕs a deal. You forgive him right away. So folks, weÕre off to England. The practices are making many sports-men lazy and training-shy. What is more, they are driving intelligent and potentially good players away from the sportsfield. These young people had always associated juju with the forest or the dimly-lit room. Now they learn it has a place in sport, and they don't like the idea. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2000012707:SAED:SPORTS:BOXING:JAN1955 - A new Hammer Strikes! - Jason 'Black Hammer' Radebe started boxing in 1947 when he joined Barney Molopo's back-yard gym. During the next five years till he turned pro he had 15 amateur fights winning 10 and beating now-known boxers like Young Seabela who was then aptly called "The fighting machine." In all his eight pro fights of which he won six - he was not an impressive boxer. Then came his lucky break when he was matched with Enoch Nhlapho. With the first bell of the fight, we saw a Radebe who definitely had championship material in him. He could punch; he could think- and he had guts.
