Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2000012516:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:BOXING:SEP1957 - Treason: End of Round One - To keep fit, Nelson Mandela, solicitor, was at Jerry Moloi's boxing gym at Orlando every evening. He's shadow-sparring with Moloi (right) a professional featherweight. As the biggest case in South Africa's history lumbered to the end of its first stage this August 1957, the 156 accused men and women wondered how many of them would be back in court again. The 156 national leaders had first appeared at a preparatory examination into treason at the end of 1956, in the specially constructd court at the Drill Hall, Johannesburg; they had spent their lives in and out of court for most of 1957; and they could now see the possibility of the same prospect for the third calendar year, 1958, if they were committed for trial in the Supreme Court. Description: March 1953 Ð Fishy Business! Ð neg 081. SAED:SOCIAL:DRUM MARCH 1953Ð Fishy Business Ð A lot of people think that the Cape Coloured fishermen make thousands by lifting a finger. The fishermen donÕt agree: and after weÕd been out with them one night, we didnÕt either. At Kalk Bay the little fleet goes out nearly every night around midnight. They spend the whole night fishing, and come back to sell their catch next morning. Some days people just wonÕt want fish, and they have to be chucked back where they came from: other days (like Boxing Day) theyÕll buy at any price: but thatÕs just when the fish donÕt seem to be around. Description: SAED:SPORTS:BOXING:PERSONALITY:DRUM MARCH 1953 Jolting Joe, Middleweight Champ, tells Drum all about his travels overseas. Keeping Fit, in England or at home is a daily practice with Joliting Joe. He's so keen on boxing that he began gymnasium training two weeks after his return to South Africa. If all goes well, he will have his first fight in March against Simon Greb or Windy Mkize After leaving Johannesburg on a cold and windy night, you can imagine my surprise and joy when I alighted in London on a perfect summer day two mornings later! Description: DM2008060287:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1980 - Zimbabwes Heroes Come Home The remains of Josiah Tongogara are carried from the military transport plane. Two heroes of Zimbabwes long and bitter liberation struggle came back to rest in Salisbury last month, when the bodies of Josiah Tongogara and Jason Moyo were flown in from Mozambique and Zambia for state-re-burial. Tongogara, a military genius who helped lead Zimbabwes revolution from the start 20 years ago, and who masterminded the final thrusts which bought Rhodesias leaders to the negotiating table, was overall commander of the guerrilla forces when he died tragically in a car accident in Mozambique on Boxing Day last year. He was on his way to visit troops at his central base at Chimoio, not far from the Zimbabwean border. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2000012521:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:BOXING:SEP1957 - Treason: End of Round One - To keep fit, Nelson Mandela, solicitor, was at Jerry Moloi's boxing gym at Orlando every evening. Title: A new Hammer Strikes! - Jason 'Black Hammer' Radebe started boxing in 1947
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2000012707:SAED:SPORTS:BOXING:JAN1955 - A new Hammer Strikes! - Jason 'Black Hammer' Radebe started boxing in 1947 when he joined Barney Molopo's back-yard gym. During the next five years till he turned pro he had 15 amateur fights winning 10 and beating now-known boxers like Young Seabela who was then aptly called "The fighting machine." In all his eight pro fights of which he won six - he was not an impressive boxer. Then came his lucky break when he was matched with Enoch Nhlapho. With the first bell of the fight, we saw a Radebe who definitely had championship material in him. He could punch; he could think- and he had guts.
