Title: Why Can't Zik Be Pals With Awolowo?

Description: DRUM DEC 1959 WHY CAN ZIK BE PALS WITH AWOLOWO?. NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1959 Why Can Zik Be Pals With Awolowo? f Chief Awolowo and I were able to become friendly, we could solve our problems just like that. That my view. Does Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, leader of the NCNC and premier of Eastern Nigeria, hate Chief Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the Action Group and premier of Western Nigeria, and does Chief Awolowo hate Dr Azikiwe in turn? There are more Nigerians who would say yes to this question than there are who would say no. And it is no wonder, seeing that so much evidence of the past has pointed to the existence of a violent mutual hatred between the two leaders. Description: DM2008060264:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1960 - NDP Holds First Historic Congress Congress Delegates heard former NDP President Leopold Takawira tell the congress: Government manoeuvres to destroy a legitimate political party are cowardly. But wounded and battered, like Lord Nelson, the NDP limps to victory. In the sweltering heat of the tropical summer sun, a surging crowd comprising thousands of African men and women - all intent in their purpose talked in small groups. Now and then they paced to and from the pavement. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

Description: DM2008102302:SAED:RELIGION:DEC 1960 - The Temple That Will Not Die - The Temple As It Is Today. This is the strange story of a temple that refuses to die. The Umbilo Shree Ambalavanar Alayam - more commonly known as the Umbilo Temple - has more fact and fiction wrapped around it than any other place of worship in the country. It recent months thousands of Hindus from Natal have been flocking to the derelict temple in Durban to worship. The temple was deconsecrated almost two decades ago and various attempts at demolishing the structure have been made. (Photograph by G.R Naidoo ©BAHA)

Description: DM1999111214:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:DEC1968 - The Case Of Rawson Macharia - On October 21 1952 the colonial authorities arrested six leaders they believed were responsible for directing the operations of the Mau Mau Movement, Jomo Kenyatta was one of them. After three weeks in detention they were transported to Kapenguria to stand trial for managing Mau Mau. The judge in that famous summing up of the trial at Kapenguria said: "Although my finding of the facts means that I disbelieve ten witnesses for the defence and I believe one witness for the prosecution, I have no hesitation on doing so. Rawson Macharia gave his evidence so well." In 1958, six years later, the truth was out. Rawson Macharia's evidence was placed in doubt. (This picture) Kenyatta was called to give evidence at Macharia's trial in January 1959. It was the first time he had been seen in public since his trial at Kapenguria. Most of the time he doesn't care or know about them. Most times he's heading for the nearest shebeen. It has been said of Kippie that the ghost of Charlie 'The Bird' Parker lives in him. He has been called the problem child of music, the naughty Puck with a profound weakness for a shapely leg irrespective of age. But, whatever widely varying opinions people have about Kippie, they're unanimous on one point-that he is a great and devoted musician. African leaders at the recent Unity Conference at Donalson Center, Orlando last weekend have agreed to an All-In Conferene of the African people early in the New Year. They stressed that there was complete Unanimity on all resolutions, despite agreement that those present should not try to eliminate their existing ideology differences. The most important resolution tabled at conference was Unity. This must be achieved for the attainment of three principles, racialism must be ended; a non-racial government formed and the work must be done by use of the non-violent methods. Conference immediately elected a continuation committe to ensure that the principles adopted in the resolutions would be hammered into practical shape. Government should be asked to hold a National Convention on the question of democratic rights for all before the declaration of a republic day on May 31 next year. (Photog

Description: DM2000092012:GCP:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:25DEC1960 - Leaders Agree On All-In Conference - African leaders at the recent Unity Conference at Donalson Center, Orlando last weekend have agreed to an All-In Conferene of the African people early in the New Year. Government should be asked to hold a National Convention on the question of democratic rights for all before the declaration of a republic day on May 31 next year. (Photograph by Dr
