Description: MARCH 1953 HIYA, STRANGER! NEG 243SAED:SPORTS:BOXING:PERSONALITY:DRUM MARCH 1953 Jolting Joe, Middleweight Champ, tells Drum all about his travels overseas. Welcome Home by his eldest daughter Tandiwe on his return from England. She'd been told of her father's coming, but wasn't very sure it was him till he entered the gate it'd been a long time! After leaving Johannesburg on a cold and windy night, you can imagine my surprise and joy when I alighted in London on a perfect summer day two mornings later! We went through Customs with people curiously staring at this solitary and rather puzzled black face amongst all the white ones, we boarded the express train for Doncaster, Yorkshire, where the Wood-cocks, and now I, were to live and the train! Description: SAED:SOCIAL:PERSONALITIES:DRUM SEPTEMBER 1953 Interview with Sobhuza II Paramount Chief Sobhuza II, of Swaziland, passed through Johannesburg recently on his return from the Coronation in England. He was accompanied by his wife Lamakolwa, his daughter Princess Gcinapi and Counsellors. In the city he was given a warm reception by people of all nationalities. ÒI met the Queen of Tonga a very important figure and a charming lady. We arrived at Southampton at the same time, and I was glad to know she was born the same year as I was 1899. The coronation celebrations had a spirit all of their own warm friendships and inter-racial jubilation which I have never known before. .(Photograph by Drum Photographer ©Baileys Archives) NEG 266 FRAME 4

DonÕt think IÕm sissy because IÕm pushing Jepu-thatÕs my sister VeronicaÕs pram. The photograph was all a mistake and me being naughty! Me IÕm the terrificest little boyo in South Africa. IÕm Jake NtuliÕs little bit. That is why, IÕm a bit annoyed with Jake, though heÕs my proud father. He left us too long ago. Me and my bigger sister Veronica and Mummy. November last year, when he writes a letter he says: ÔLove and kisses to you and the kids.ÕÕ We told mummy to tell Daddy to quit this business of sending us his love and kisses by air mail. We want him in person. When your Dad writes and says heÕs bought you a house in England, man, thatÕs a deal. You forgive him right away. So folks, weÕre off to England. Description: DM2008072209:NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:MAR 1959 The Strange Case Of Mrs Ransome-Kuti And The Alake Of Abeokuta It is from this building, palatial and solid, that the Alake rules in uneasy glory over the people of Abeokuta. Sir Ladapo Ademola, the Alake (King) of Abeokuta, is one of the most glorious Yoruba Obas. But his glory doesnt derive from the possession of 89 crowns a fantastic number even for the Queen of England that are stuffed in his sitting-room cupboard. Nor does it derive from the fact that he has not a single black sheep in his family, that all his 31 children were given either good education or the means of going through life without tears.
