Description: MAY 1959 WHY BEACH APARTHEID!SAED:POLITICS:APARTHEID:DRUM MAY 1959 Why beach Apartheid! Kalk Bay has for long been a favourite bathing spot for non-whites. No one questioned it. But will we be able to go on swimming there? The people of the Cape have always got along happily without apartheid on their beaches. Now noseybodies from the north, mad with separate entrances and ’For Whites Only“notices, have been agitating to clear non-whites from certain spot. But why break a tradition which been accepted by all for 300 years? (Photograph by Kenneth Mackenzie Baileys Archives) Neg 6

The NEPU, which is by no means aristocratic and which cannot go aristocratic without losing its claim to be the champion of the classless masses of the North, found the aristocratic accent and manners that the NCNC had cultivated after the 1959 federal election very embarrassing and irritating. Sekou Toure of Guinea, steps down from a plane on to the tarmac at Accra, Ghana. There to greet him is the head of another new state, a bare eighteen months senior to his own, Kwame Nkrumah. Description: DM2001091202:GCPFE:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:17MAY1964 - Mafekeng To Pleade For Wife's Return - Mr Moffat Mafekeng husband of Elizabeth Mafekeng. Mr Moffat Mafekeng, of Paarl, is to ask Mr Vorster to allow his wife, Elizabeth, who was banished in 1959, to return to South Africa. Mrs Elizabeth Mafekeng was National President of the African Food and Canning Workers Union. She was told to go to Southey, a small village 72 miles from Vryburg. Mrs Mafekeng, howecer defied the order and fled to Basutoland. When I spoke to Mr Mafekeng at his home in Barborosa Street, in Paarl, last week, he told me that his wife's banishment order was due to to expire in October this year. But he pointed out that as his wife defied the order she is liable to be arrested as soon as she returned to South Africa. Mr Mafekeng said he would ask Mr Vorster to allow his wife to come back. He said that his wife had had a heart attack recently. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
