This pretty has a different type of beauty, her sideways glance is both demure and appealing, her gentle expression a contract to the vicious Virginia and Babsy! For many days last month Mr Drum, who revels in digging up the most unusual stories for the benefit of his readers was out in search of African beauty. Locations, hospitals, factories and private homes, in fact even side streets were thoroughly combed. The result is the galaxy of African brunettes appearing on these pages. He was accompanied by his wife Lamakolwa, his daughter Princess Gcinapi and Counsellors. In the city he was given a warm reception by people of all nationalities. ÒI met the Queen of Tonga a very important figure and a charming lady. We arrived at Southampton at the same time, and I was glad to know she was born the same year as I was 1899. We cannot forget that visit of the Queen and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. In true African fashion and the African does not make merry in small blushing ways we hit the frenziest outburst in unforgettable scenes. Description: DM2008072209:NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:MAR 1959 The Strange Case Of Mrs Ransome-Kuti And The Alake Of Abeokuta It is from this building, palatial and solid, that the Alake rules in uneasy glory over the people of Abeokuta. Sir Ladapo Ademola, the Alake (King) of Abeokuta, is one of the most glorious Yoruba Obas. But his glory doesnt derive from the possession of 89 crowns a fantastic number even for the Queen of England that are stuffed in his sitting-room cupboard. Nor does it derive from the fact that he has not a single black sheep in his family, that all his 31 children were given either good education or the means of going through life without tears. The launching of a television station was first mooted in Nigeria as far back as 1956 shortly before Queen Elizabeth IIs visit to Nigeria, by the then Premier of Eastern Nigeria, Dr. the Hon. Nnamdi Azikiwe. For various reasons, this was not possible and so the Western Nigeria Government were first, into action, WNTV began programming on October 1, 1959. Since then, WNTV has improved considerable. For, during the pioneering days, it depended wholly on imported programmes including a large helping of wild west films. For the past two years, WNTV has shown live programmes of light entertainment, Drama, Discussion Groups, Educational Programmes all local programmes with gradually improving standards as the television teams learn to use their new medium. Enjoying a right royal reception: The Duke and Duchess of Kent represented the Queen at Uganda's independence. A new flag is flying in Kampala, Uganda, these days. Yet, yet another new nation has emerged. Almost suddenly, and with less noise than most of its predecessors in Africa, Uganda becomes independent on October 9, 1962. And to theUgandans more than to most, the prospects of independence may mean more prosperity, better chances on the export market and better education. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008060248:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1964 Birth Of A Nation Independence Day, October 24, 1964 Zambians become citizens of the world. Kenneth Kaunda welcomes Queen Elizabeths aunt, the Princess Royal, to the Independence Stadium. In a shower of sparks, Zambia was born. Giant rockets, bursting high, splattered and spumed, the night wind brought down a fiery rain of sparks on the 180,000 people crowding below in the huge Independence Stadium three times the size of Olympic stadium in Tokyo, everybody told everybody. But those were about the only fire-works evident as, with monumental calmness, Northern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zambia. Simon Kapwepwe, Foreign Minister to-be, showed most emotion. Haile Selassie I, Lion of Judah, Emperor of Abyssinia, one of Africa's last kings, nearly lost his throne recently. This article was written at the time of his state visit to the new Republic of Ghana - and underlines ironically the basic differences between a feudal monarchy and an up-to-date democracy. with the rapidly surging fire of African liberation spreading all over the continent, Emperor Haile Selassie I, Lion of Judah, God's Elect and descendant of the Queen of Sheba, finds himself as one of the only two remaining effective reigning monarchs in Africa. If modesty, love of sports, charming manners and good looks count for anything, then the Zulus have something to celebrate when their future ruler Prince Goodwill Zwelithini presents them with a queen in the shapely form of Miss Sibongile Winifred Dlamini. She claimed his roving eye spoilt their marriage. One of the women who featured greatly in the life of the much-married king was Clementine Jali, known as Ma-Jali. Cyprian took her on as queen in 1955 but this proved an ill-fated match. In a divorce hearing in 1959 in Maritzburg the ruler of the mighty Zulu nation testified that Ma-Jali often beat him up and wasn't giving him the royal time he felt entitled to as a birthright. They later separated, and Ma-Jali blamed the break-up of the marriage on the roving royal eye. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
