Description: DM2000041029:GCP:SPORTS:29AUG1965 Ref's Double Trouble Day - Bully Springbok and FBS lock, Melody Madikane, breaks with the ball after a scrum against St. Cyprians. It was double day for the referee of the needle match between FABS and St Cyprians here at the weekend. Both sides lodged protests about his decisions after the match. When M. Mjuza went over to score for St Cyprians, he fouled the touchline but neither the referee nor the touch judge spotted this, so the referee awarded the try. The FABS captain protested to the referee, but later withdrew the complaint. In the closing minutes of the match, FABS forced a lineout near St Cyprians gole-line. H . Madikane took the ball cleanly but was prevented from scoring. W. Maku however, snatched the ball from an apparently offside position and scored. Description: DM2002042215:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:NOV1953 - Political Football - Moses Kotane. Non-white political leaders, banned from doing much else, enjoy a lively game of soccer. Brawny Mji led the veterans to victory. Non-white politicians are complaining of being kicked around, and being used as 'political football': so the other day they decided to do a bit of kicking around themselves, and got down to some 'strickly recreational' football at Mia's farm, near Johannesburg. "The most remarkable game I've ever seen,"was the comment of Dan Twala, the referee of the match, which was between Veterans and Youth. Most of the Veterans were banned men (though some political veterans had been banned even from playing football) Veterans of course won 1-0, after half an hour's devastating play.
