Description: SAED:APARTHEID:PERSONALITY Black Spots Or White Spots? Johannesburg City Council plans to move Africa areas out of town. There are many fine houses in the ”Black Spots'; Will this house, too, have to go? The beautiful home of J.B. Mabuza, a well known business man in the city. To understand and appreciate the implications of the proposal (agreed to between the Government on the hand and the City Council of Johannesburg on the other) to remove. Sophiatown, Martindale and Newclare, the so called ”black spots' on the Western areas of Johannesburg, it is necessary not to discuss it not in isolation but against the general background of the housing of Africans in Johannesburg of which it is an integral and inseparable part. Description: DM2008081101:GHAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JUL 1958: Gee! She Is Beatiful - GHANA'S FIRST SIGHT OF HER:There were mutters of approval all round as the people of Ghana got a glimpse of Mrs. Nkrumah, right, at a ceremony when a statue of her husband was unveiled. The important ceremony was over. The Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, rose from his seat and walked down the aisle. But for once Ghana's leader failed to draw the stares. We were all looking at his wife, the former Miss Fathia Helen Ritzk, of Egypt. When, on December 30 last year, Ghana heard that Dr. Nkrumah had been married that morning to a woman they had never heard of, and who had arrived unheralded in the country only that day, it was the manner of the marriage rather than the fact that shocked the country. Description: DM2008090209:EAED:SOCIAL:PERSONALITIES:JAN 1976 -Shame Of The Shanties - Despite The Authorities, shantytowns became semi-permanent features. A dire shortage of housing, worsened by the continuos stream of people to the cities, led to serious urban problems in Kenya. Shantytowns and slam, areas sprang up on the edges of the cities. Shanty estates grow up from day to day in Nairobi, as they do in many other cities of the world. Kenya's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Munyua Waiyaki, said recently: "Though Nairobi is acclaimed as a beautiful city, there are some sore sights, like Mathare and Kawangare and other shanty areas, such as Pumwani and Dagoretti, not forgetting other sections in different corners of Nairobi." Description: DM2000062301:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:WOMEN:JAN1960 - Mrs Mafekeng Talks To Drum - Mrs Elizabeth Mafekeng and her three month old daughter. We are in Basutoland. The woman is Mrs Mafekeng, victim of a South African banishment order. Our search is over. We are the first newsmen to find her and interview her since her deportation from Paarl in October last year. Mrs Mafekeng, 42 year old mother of 11 children, was the president of the South African Food and Canning Workers Union, until the government ordered her to leave her home and family for the barren part of Vryburg district, without charge, trial or explanation. So a few days after receiving the Union Government's banishment order Elizabeth bade farewell to her husband and 10 chidren and, with two month old Theresa Uhuru clutched to her breast, set off by car with friends for the wilds of ruggedly beautiful Basutoland. Description: DM2000111304:SAED: BEAUTY:NOV1956 - Norma Naidoo, beauty so often depends upon the subtle quality that a woman may have of changing the ue and personality of her face with her changing excitements. Few people know that this is exactly the secret of Norma Naidoo's sweeping success at beauty competitions. She's a different Norma for every occassion, and at each occassion she's just the right one, this beautiful creature of infinite variety. Petite 18-year-old Norma Naidoo is of the Cape, thoroughly Capetonian, winner of the best figure prizein Body Beautiful contests. Recently she added another award to her collection when she was voted Pageant Queen at a competion held at the Avalon Theatre, where girls billowed out in glamorous evening wear. Norma won her first title at the age of 16. (Photograph by Drum Photographer © Baileys Archives) neg T639
