Description: SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:DRUM NOVEMBER 1956 Gatsha Buthelezi, whom Drum described as a rebel chief, will play a decisive role yet in Zululand. People who know what is going on in the native affairs Department say that one of the reasons why the Government has not yet recognized Gatsha formally as Chief of the Shenge Tribe, might well have been the article.

Description: SAED:SOCIAL:GAMBLING:DRUM JANUARY 1961- Fah Fee: all sections play this number racket The sleek American car with the China man behind the wheel threads its way carefully down Hanover Street, spine of Cape Towns teeming District Six, where they say a thousand murderers could hide for a lifetime from the cops. Even in the changed world of today. It pulls in to the curb, the engine still ticking over, and the chinaman gives a gentle toot on his horn. Form the shadowy doorway of a tumbledown shop a lean, quick figure emerges, one hand gripping something in his jacket pocket. He glances swiftly up and down the street, over the heads of gutterfuls of kids and round the broad beams of washerwomen coming and going. It's all clear and he draws a fistful of paper slips from his pocket. As the tiny square of paper is taken from the matchbox the Chinaman is already on his way again, and the helper lifts his hand to his throat and draws it quickly a cross as though killing a cocker

Description: . NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JUN 1967 Ð The Last Salute To A Soldier Of Honour Ð Pa Isaiah Fajuyi (94) say his son Francis Adekunle Fajuyi, was so considerate. Pa Isaiah Fajuyi added his testimony: ÒAs you know, I am nearly 95 years old and I never like to miss my attendance at the church. A few weeks before his death, Adekunle came home and noticed that I usually walked the two miles from my house to the church every morning. He was very disturbed about this and he told me to send his immediate brother, Sunday, to him when he finished his tour and he would send me a small second-hand car. Two weeks, later, I sent Sunday to him. When Sunday arrived in Ibadan the conference of obas and emirs was just beginning and Adekunle asked his brother to wait until the meeting was over. That boy was there when he was killed. I never got the car. I never saw him again.Ó (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

Description: DM2008061213:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:1955 - Boycott Clash with Police - Faced with a ban on meetings of over 250, Kamya in a car staged huge car processions through Kampala's streets. After nearly three months the incident-packed boycott of non-African shops led by the Uganda National Movement ( UNM) reached a climax in a cash with baton-wielding police. After a meeting under Kampala's"Tree of Liberty" addressed by the movement's fiery leaders, suppoters rushed to a nearby bus depot to put the bus boycott in to force by pulling passengers out of their seats. At first sign of violence, police with batons and 200 reserves moved onto the scene. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Enjoying a right royal reception: The Duke and Duchess of Kent represented the Queen at Uganda's independence. A new flag is flying in Kampala, Uganda, these days. Yet, yet another new nation has emerged. Almost suddenly, and with less noise than most of its predecessors in Africa, Uganda becomes independent on October 9, 1962. And to theUgandans more than to most, the prospects of independence may mean more prosperity, better chances on the export market and better education. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008060304:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JUL 1962 - After Shootings, Strike What Hope For Peace? You are ill-paid because the wealth of the country is not evenly distributed, Mswaka, ATUC President. The shooting occurred at Harare and Highfields. According to ATUC, four Africans were killed. The government put the death toll at two. What parked off the strike? ATUC leaders say it was a last resort after they had exhausted other means to reach an agreement on labour matters with the government. They say: We sent three deputations to see the Minister of Labour on industrial issues, but they were all unsuccessful. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

They feel its not just my care but their car, too, he says of his old township friends. Professor Stanlake Samkange is hardly a newcomer to the jungle-like politics of Rhodesia. At 56, on must assume he knows what hes up to when he parades himself, his 17-year-old son, Stan, two dogs and a 1965 Silver Cloud Rolls-Royce in front of a mock medieval castle set deep in the heart of Hatfield, a once all-White Salisbury suburb. It was the craziest demonstration that Southern Rhodesia had known in recent history. There were demonstrator and counter-demonstrators and there even anti-demonstration demonstrators! Eggs were thrown, rotten vegetables and strong words were hurled around, a few students got annoyed and punched at each other, tomatoes were hurled at a police car, one student lost his glasses in a scuffle with the police and was arrested, one student was tapped smartly on the head with a baton, one policeman lost his hat and his composure when he was mauled by a crowd of demonstrators. Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008060287:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1980 - Zimbabwes Heroes Come Home The remains of Josiah Tongogara are carried from the military transport plane. Two heroes of Zimbabwes long and bitter liberation struggle came back to rest in Salisbury last month, when the bodies of Josiah Tongogara and Jason Moyo were flown in from Mozambique and Zambia for state-re-burial. Tongogara, a military genius who helped lead Zimbabwes revolution from the start 20 years ago, and who masterminded the final thrusts which bought Rhodesias leaders to the negotiating table, was overall commander of the guerrilla forces when he died tragically in a car accident in Mozambique on Boxing Day last year. He was on his way to visit troops at his central base at Chimoio, not far from the Zimbabwean border. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008090905:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:APR 1962 - Kaunda Gets An Early Call - Then comes the official call - the day's work has begun early. That special morning was a good morning, bright, clear, crisp with woodsmoke rising and hanging in thin columns. A black official car purred down the dingy road to Kenneth Kaunda's home. And official got out and stepped most officially up Mr. Kaunda, in dressing gown, by the door. "Ah Mr. Kaunda, so nice to see you... they want you at the Secretariat... message from Mr. Maudling." This is the story of the bit of business of Kaunda's that no body else knew about. The secret call to Secretariat that started another hectic day. But more than that it's a story of a man and his way of life. (Photograph by Peter Davies BAHA)
