President Kaunda suspended him and ordered an investigations into the case. The romours were proved unfounded and gave Milner the verve to declare that the authors of the cash rumours and those accusing him of being one of the coup plotters were the same "individious gang of three" that bore him a grudge. Description: DM2000012407:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:NOV58 - Treason Trial Halts - Nelson Mandela, Aziz Pahad and Winnie Mandela outside the court. October 13, 1958 - the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. "Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused," he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of "Africa" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief. The defiance campaign was born over a year ago, in Johannesburg, on July 1951, when non-white leaders met and decided to form a Joint Planning Council to co-ordinate Africans, Indians and Coloureds, and "to embark upon an immediate mass campaign for the repeal of oppressive measures" which the Council pledged to attack were, and still are, limited to the Pass Laws, Stock Limitations, the Group Areas Act, the Separate Voters, Represantation Act, the Bantu Authorities Act, and the Suppresssion of Communism Act. Suddenly one realised that the whole drama of the Treason Trial had shifted. During the preparatory examination in Johannesburg, all the excitement was outside the court. Scores of policemen, photographers, repoters and members of the public milled outside of the red-brick courtroom. Now, in the ex-synagogue, in Paul Kruger Street, Pretoria, only 91 persons faced the actual trial. Sixty four had been discharged by order of the Attorney General. As soon as the trial began, the charge was withdrawn against one, Mr H. G. Makgothi, who had been taken ill with tuberculosis. (Photograph by Drum Photographer Baileys Archives)

Description: DM2000030611:SAED:SPORT:PERSONALITY:JUN1955 - Transvaal's little Mo - Constance Molefe, junior tennis star, who aims to take the senior tittle. Few African women ever reach the tennis lime light even if they do, its usually at a late age. But there is today a steady flow of girl learners, under expert guidance, and we can expect a tennis boom for our ladies in the near future. Topping Transvaal's junior is pretty Constance Molefe a 16 year old primary scholer from Orlando. She's fresh and young, energetic, a glutton for hard court practises, and shows remarkable ability for a girl of her age. Fortunate for Constance, she was born into a tennis family. Her father, Ralph, who is also her guide and coach, is a one -time holder with Grant Khomo the countries champ of the South African doubles title. Her mother, Rachel was a talented player in her days, but has had to forfeit tennis for housework. (Photograph by Jurgen Schadeberg @ Baileys Archives) neg 515

The treason trials, now the talk of South Africa and the world at large, started with a bang-bang-bang. There was drama inside the Drill Hall, where the preparatory examination into charges of high treason alleged against more than 150 persons from various organisations was held before the Chief Magistrate of Bloemfontein, Mr F.C.A. Wessel. And there was drama outside in the streets of Johannesburg when the police clashed several times with the crowd. All because the Drill Hall could not accommodate all the 5 000 people outside. First is was a booing that led to a baton charge that led to a stone-throwing that led to a gun-shooting. And side interludes of snatching Press cameras and arresting photo
