Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008060291:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:AUG 1962 - It Was The Craziest Demonstration Ever Student arrested . It was the craziest demonstration that Southern Rhodesia had known in recent history. There were demonstrator and counter-demonstrators and there even anti-demonstration demonstrators! Eggs were thrown, rotten vegetables and strong words were hurled around, a few students got annoyed and punched at each other, tomatoes were hurled at a police car, one student lost his glasses in a scuffle with the police and was arrested, one student was tapped smartly on the head with a baton, one policeman lost his hat and his composure when he was mauled by a crowd of demonstrators. Good, clean fun. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Title: Glory Of The Coast - The Girls Go Gay

Description: DM2008081409:GHAED:EDUCATION:SOCIAL:PERSONALITIES:JUN 1960 - A Glory Of The Coast - The Girls Go Gay - Full of the joy of youth, the rhythm of the same dances their mothers do back home, the girls raise their cheery voices during the Founder's Day Celebrations. The white children join in the fun, and even if they don't know all the steps, they are happy to be part of the crowd. This picture shows also why so many boys never want to leave Achimota. About 40 years ago a man had a vision. He wanted West Africa to have a school comparable with the best in Britain. From that ideal has grown Achimota, pride of Ghana, glory of the coast to-day. Description: DM2008103104:SAED:PROHIBITION:POLITICS:SEP 1969 - The Inside Story Of Our Seven Swinging Years - All the fun of a party without worrying about a cop raid. We've had that right for seven years since liquor prohibition was lifted. One prolonged drunken orgy. The beginning of the seven lean years. The extinction of the non-white population, just like that of America's Red Indians by the White man's firewater. Poverty, neglect of children. Death in instalments. These were the predictions of the prophets of doom when prohibition of liquor for us was lifted, seven years ago. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008102403:SAED:SOCIAL:WEDDING:PERSONALITIES:JUL 1962 - Quiet Big Wedding - Flower Girls snatch moment of fun while couple not looking. The big wedding turned out to quiet a quiet affair - with far fewer than the thousands of guests who were expected. A late lunch was served - it turned out to be dinner - and festivities (including sacred music) lasted two whole days. Township gossip buzzed about it. This was to be a big show, Chief Tidimane Pilane marrying Irene Ross of Johannesburg. Hundreds of pounds were spent on preparations for the affair, tipped to be the 'Wedding of the Year'. Description: DM2008102711:SAED:CHILDREN:SOCIAL:JUN 1963 - The Wonderful World Of Kids - A few pieces of wire, four battered wheels, two or three old planks and this township gang has a cart that will give them many fun-filled hours - and occassional arguments about who's going to do the pushing. In this trouble-torn, fast changing world, there remains one constant and untouched wonder - our children. They bring us our greates joy and our biggest heartbreak. What is more warming than a child's smile, and what more saddening than the trusting look of a sick or starving child? Theirs is a world left untainted by the hates, fears and prejudices of their parents. (Photograph by Walter Pitso BAHA)

"He expected a smart brush-off and he nearly fell over backwards when Stella, sweet Stella, purred: 'But cer-r-r-rtainly' He rushed aroun Priy a Ramrakh to tak the shots, and what shots they are. This rock-n' rolling coastal beauty just adores boy friends by the way. But not lovers. She told Drum she likes to keep her loving cool. And marriage? Look, brother, she told us, I' m having a jolly good time-good clean fun and I don't want to be tied to one guy for keeps yet". She's only 18, so I suppose that's fair. oh dear!
