    Title: HOW I ESCAPE
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008060904:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES- 'How I Escape' - The London Bed-sitter in the shabby docklands suburb which became home to the deposed Kabaka as he lived out his second spell in exile. In London I quickly began to recover from my ordeal on the run. I even felt well enough to summon my tailor and order some suits to replace the old Khaki shirt and trousers in which i arrived here at the end of the 14 hour flight. Title: Uganda Enjoys Its Election Fever - Democratic Party Leader: Benedicto Kiwanuka
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008061217:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JAN 1959 - Uganda Enjoys Its Election Fever - Democratic Party Leader: Benedicto Kiwanuka - The results of the recent elections have given politicians the chance of a lifetime to build up party organisation, for a national government, and go on to work for independence. Practically every man and woman outside Ankole, Buganda, and Bugisu had the chance to vote. And about 85 per cent of the people did. The elections were fiercely contested. Religious and political passions were literally aflame. The Democratic Party, suspected of being Catholic dominated, gained most votes, but not the highest number of representatives. Title: BUILD-UP FOR THE CAMP-DOWN
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: DM2008060227:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1963 Build-Up For The Camp-Down. No Through Road said the sign, and No through road said the police when the crowds flocked to hear Nkomo. It ended this way. At 9 a.m. Mr Nkomo was in the yard of his stocked Highfield retreat. He was wearing a bright loose shirt, was hatless, and gossiping. When along came a police car containing very, very senior police men, who wished him good day. Please Mr Nkomo, can we talk to you privately? they inquired, and in the corner of the yard they handed over two letters. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008060229:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1963 Build-Up For The Camp-Down The Crowd Made Merry after the meeting, to the anger of the Police. Their message: Both Nkomo and his Peoples Caretaker Council were put into virtual retirement for three months, as of now. The reason: the familiar ones of violence and intimidation, and an apparent failure on the part of the leader Nkomo to condemn such actions. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA
