Description: . SAED:SOCIAL:DRUM FEBRUARY 1952Ð A Day In The Beach Ð-There are thousands of Africans on the Reef and in the country who have never seen the sea; but to Africans, Coloureds and Indians in Durban there is a huge salt swimming bath and a sandy beach that is free for all, and for sharks too! You can see the sharks all too well sporting themselves in the sea by the Umgeni River, and bathers must keep between strict limits if they donÕt want their feet chopped off! But that doesnÕt stop children running down to the beaches whenever they can, paddling, diving, riding on the waves and standing on their heads. People in Durban say they have plenty of problems, but the sea washes most of them away! (Photograph by Jurgen Schadeberg © BAHA) NEG 039 FRAME 19

Description: SAED:SOCIAL:PERSONALITY:DRUM NOVEMBER 1953 - MAD? Is Catching! Ð One September day was exceptionally cold, freezingly cold, and the papers said thereÕd been snow in Bethal, just over a hundred miles away. I was passing through Norwood when I saw a sight that made me blink. I saw Benjamin Mopedi, and at first thought the extreme cold had contracted his height to 3 feet 11 inches Ð they taught me at school that cold makes objects contract. But on investigation I found out that Benjamin had been the same for all the 30 years of his life. Description: NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1967 Ð Why The War Broke Out? Ð AfricaÕs youngest head of state, Major-General Yakubu Gowon, is fighting hard to keep total Nigerian unity. Many people thought that Major-General Gowon, in view of the strained relations between the North and the Ibos, would seek to consolidate a northern hold on the rest of the country. Others secretly feared that the young general was out to launch himself on a political career. But by the creation of twelve states in the federation (even when it was known that many northern leaders were opposed to it), Major-General Yakubu Gowon has disabused the minds of people. His appointment of a federal executive council embracing, undiscredited civilians as well as inclusion of civilians in his war cabinet is enough evidence that Yakubu Gowon did not set out ambitiously to establish a military dictatorship. Description: DM2008060272:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:MAY 1980 The Road To Freedom Dr Banda, with the smiling Chikerema and hand-in-pocket Nyandoro. Southern Rhodesia officially began on September 12, 1890 with the raising in Salisbury of the Union Jack. In less than one century, Rhodesia has been converted into a modern state with a superb economy and a beautiful capital city which reflects great credit on all the people concerned even if the Blacks as some urge suffered like the slaves who built the pyramids of Egypt. The Whites always looked upon Rhodesia as their own country, with the Blacks trying to interfere in it. Blacks held a different view on this. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

The Southern Rhodesian government has its own remedy for nationalists whom they have singled out as thugs. The people are quietly hustled out of their homes in midnight raids and sent off to Wha, Wha, the lonely restriction camp in the bush no far from Gwelo, where 94 restrictees are detained 31 ZANU members, the rest supporters of the PCC. Wha Wha is a complex web of guard posts with the detainees stockade nestling in the middle. The idea is that nobody, unless checked out through the strictly controlled pass system, can penetrate the web. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Chairman was Ndola's Tom Mtimi - Mr Soccer, a smiling business and newspaperman, town councilor and office bearer on a string of national and civic organisations. This was jus one more for Mtimi - one more that often kept him up all night. Backing him were a group of white pro-soccer prophets led by Luanshya's Arthur Edward Johannson (35 years of soccer administrator). Anxiously they turned out together for big kick-off. When it was all over a happier looking Mtimi told DRUM: " Yes, it's O.K. It's going to work. A more guarded Johannson said: "It took South Africa 40 years to organise pro-soccer. Description: DM2000012408:SAED:POLITICS:WOMEN:PERSONALITY:NOV58 - Treason Trial Halts - Treason Trialist Helen Joseph outside the court. October 13, 1958 - the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. "Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused," he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of "Africa" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief.
