Description: DM2011052414:SAED:BEAUTY:PERSONALITY:MODEL:JUN 1952 – Mr Drum’s Search For Beauty – A quick look-round for the Ideal of African Glamour. This pretty has a different type of beauty, her sideways glance is both demure and appealing, her gentle expression a contract to the vicious Virginia and Babsy! For many days last month Mr Drum, who revels in digging up the most unusual stories for the benefit of his readers was out in search of African beauty. Locations, hospitals, factories and private homes, in fact even side streets were thoroughly combed. The result is the galaxy of African brunettes appearing on these pages. Description: DM2008061109:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:OCT 1972 - Uganda's Year Of Destiny - On the first anniversary of Amin's coup d'etat, thousands of Ugandans turn out to watch the massive military parade through. In a dramatic 21 months since January 25, 1971, Uganda has undegone deep changes which have altered its character. From a trend towards doctrinaire African socialism before the 1971 coup, Uganda has moved to a military state where politics is forbidden. The revolution which took place early on the morning of January 25, 1971, meant the end of era of political leadership in Uganda for an unknown period. (Photograph by Drum Photograph BAHA)

Even Zimbabwes staunchest supporters noticed the heavily-armed bodyguards who constantly watch over him. Robert Mugabe has been likened to a man on a tight-rope juggling with high explosives. He has had to foster goodwill and reconciliation between previous enemies, balance political hopes and powers in nationalist circles, create and follow an ideology which satisfies the aspirations of the majority, while not driving off the middle class whose wealth and expertise still keeps the economy going, and subdue the hot-heads and power-hungry within his own party. Description: DM2008110409:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JAN 1962 - From Exile To A Few Days In Europe. At Durban airport, Chief Lutuli looks anxiously at his watch. With him are his wife, daughter and Mr. M.B. Yengwa. First leg of flight was late. It was a bit of a mix-up. After driving in style to Durban airport - in the same convertible Mr. Macmillan used - and greeting thousands of well-wishers, Mr. Lutuli was not permitted to address the crowd waiting for him at Jan Smuts Airport. And then the plane had to come back and the Lutuli's spent the night at the airport where you couldn't get to see them. But next day they said their goodbyes at last. Description: DM2002042207:SAED:SOCIAL:CRIME:NOV1952 - Gang War Crisis! - Bullet Corner. Active corner in gang war. A little while ago a gang made attempts to bump off Baby Face. Twenty shots were fired; no one was injured. As gang war rages this corner pinpoints itself as strategically important. Even before the present crisis it had a colourful history. It is the haunt of prostitutes, dagga smokers, hoodlums, etc. Recently a white drunk was stripped naked here. Despite notoriety, Bullet Corner is poorly policed. Because of expected attacks from rival gangs, local gangsters with headquarters close by keep vigilante watch. Two man pirade silently and unobtrusively and keep alert because of threat made on life of leader. Drum cameraman took this picture at considerable risk as gangsters present inteference by press, especially Drum, which they regard as menace to their activities. (Photograph by Bob Gosani BAHA)
