    Title: Why beach Apartheid!
Path: african.pictures / Bailey's African History Archive / Drum Social Histories
Description: SAED:POLITICS:APARTHEID:DRUM MAY 1959 Ð Why beach Apartheid! Ð There are no apartheid notices, but only whites use swings. Some want practice to become law. Kalk Bay has for long been a favourite bathing spot for non-whites. No one questioned it. But will we be able to go on swimming there? The people of the Cape have always got along happily without apartheid on their beaches. Now noseybodies from the north, mad with separate entrances and ÒFor Whites OnlyÓnotices, have been agitating to clear non-whites from certain spot. But why break a tradition which been accepted by all for 300 years? (Photograph by Kenneth Mackenzie ©Baileys Archives) Neg 9

Description: . SAED:SOCIAL:HEALTH:DRUM AUGUST 1952 Ð Birth Of A Baby Ð Mrs Elizabeth Seleke, the expectant mother, smiles calmly as nurse Mtuyedwa feels her pulse, watching for signs of the approaching birth. The birth of a baby is the greatest event in the world. Although it means an upheaval in the home, hard work and worry for the midwife and sometimes pain for the mother, when it is all over it brings new life and rejoicing. The midwifeÕs job is often a hard one, for most of her patients are poor African women with little equipment. Often the midwife must search for clean towels and, when the bay is born, be content to wrap it in some old garment. (Photograph by Jurgen Schaderberg © BAHA) NEG 077 FRAME 11

Description: DM2000020401:SAED SPORT:PERSONALITY:SOCCER:JUL1954 - Professor Of Soccer - Brilliant play earns Peter Mavuso 'Professorship' in Alexandra soccer. Nimble as a kitten and cunning as a fox, Peter 'Professor' Mavuso, 20 year old member of Alexandra Gunners F.C., is real hot stuff. He was nicknamed 'Professor' because the fans thought that he has mastered all aspects of the soccer game. He has the technique, the brain and physical fitness; requirements that are so necessary in such a tough game. He was given this alias when he was 18 years old and playing in the middle-division league of the Alexandra football league. When this spectacular soccerite sways hither end tither into action, furious and daring opponents, of balancing this way and that, fumble to rise behind him. Then the crowd shouts: "Professor!...My boy!" Yes, this chappie is good. And he is a boy for every football fan! Even a boy for the many admiring girls who spend their Sunday afternoons

A group of vivacious young Orlando St. John's school lads formed themselves into a football club 14 years ago and called themselves Pirates.
