Description: DM2011060204:NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1967 – Why The War Broke Out? – Africa’s youngest head of state, Major-General Yakubu Gowon, is fighting hard to keep total Nigerian unity. Many people thought that Major-General Gowon, in view of the strained relations between the North and the Ibos, would seek to consolidate a northern hold on the rest of the country. Description: DRUM DEC 1959 WHY CAN ZIK BE PALS WITH AWOLOWO?. NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1959 Why Can Zik Be Pals With Awolowo? f Chief Awolowo and I were able to become friendly, we could solve our problems just like that. That my view. Does Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, leader of the NCNC and premier of Eastern Nigeria, hate Chief Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the Action Group and premier of Western Nigeria, and does Chief Awolowo hate Dr Azikiwe in turn? There are more Nigerians who would say yes to this question than there are who would say no. And it is no wonder, seeing that so much evidence of the past has pointed to the existence of a violent mutual hatred between the two leaders. Description: DM2008061303:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1967 - How Does He Stay On Top - A growing army: on becoming president, Obote enlarged the army radically. When the central government troops attacked and captured the former Kabaka of Buganda's palace, some political observers claimed that Obote's government would not last more than six months. They argued that nobody could rule Uganda without the Kabaka and the support and co-operation of the Baganda. Now more than a year-and-a-half later Dr Obote is still at the helm of Uganda and his government is still going strong. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

We were all dubious. The country was panicking. We all prayed the Southern Rhodesia Constitution Conference should succeed. The conference first held in London last December was resumed in Salisbury on January 30 under the chairmanship of Mr Duncan Sandys, Britains Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations. It ended on February 7. This was the first conference to be convened since the colony got self government in 1923, and it was to discuss proposals for amendment of the constitution. Description: DM2008060201:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:FEB 1962 - ZAPU New Party, Old Bosses Dr Parirenyatwa, Deputy President of the new ZAPU. The Southern Rhodesia National Democratic Party was banned on a Saturday morning in December last year. Within eight days, on Sunday, December 17, the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU) was born! Long live ZAPU! cried ex-NDP followers in the African Townships. The enforcement of the new constitution against the will of the people, Dr Parirenyatwa said, is the surest method of inviting determined resistance from Africans. We shall organize intensively against the voters registration campaign which, by placing a few Africans on the lower roll and reserving the upper roll for Europeans, is meant to deceive the outside world into believing that the African now has a substantial share in the running of the country. Description: DM2008060229:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:DEC 1963 Build-Up For The Camp-Down The Crowd Made Merry after the meeting, to the anger of the Police. It ended this way. At 9 a.m. Mr Nkomo was in the yard of his stocked Highfield retreat. He was wearing a bright loose shirt, was hatless, and gossiping. When along came a police car containing very, very senior police men, who wished him good day. Please Mr Nkomo, can we talk to you privately? they inquired, and in the corner of the yard they handed over two letters. Their message: Both Nkomo and his Peoples Caretaker Council were put into virtual retirement for three months, as of now. The reason: the familiar ones of violence and intimidation, and an apparent failure on the part of the leader Nkomo to condemn such actions. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA

Kenneth Kaunda welcomes Queen Elizabeths aunt, the Princess Royal, to the Independence Stadium. In a shower of sparks, Zambia was born. Giant rockets, bursting high, splattered and spumed, the night wind brought down a fiery rain of sparks on the 180,000 people crowding below in the huge Independence Stadium three times the size of Olympic stadium in Tokyo, everybody told everybody. But those were about the only fire-works evident as, with monumental calmness, Northern Rhodesia became the Republic of Zambia. Simon Kapwepwe, Foreign Minister to-be, showed most emotion. Description: DM2008081101:GHAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:JUL 1958: Gee! She Is Beatiful - GHANA'S FIRST SIGHT OF HER:There were mutters of approval all round as the people of Ghana got a glimpse of Mrs. Nkrumah, right, at a ceremony when a statue of her husband was unveiled. The important ceremony was over. The Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, rose from his seat and walked down the aisle. But for once Ghana's leader failed to draw the stares. We were all looking at his wife, the former Miss Fathia Helen Ritzk, of Egypt. When, on December 30 last year, Ghana heard that Dr. Nkrumah had been married that morning to a woman they had never heard of, and who had arrived unheralded in the country only that day, it was the manner of the marriage rather than the fact that shocked the country. A True Christian Gentleman - a man of faith, Chief Lutuli practises Christianity in his ordinary daily life. Chief Lutuli said "The main thing is that the Government and the people should be democratic to the core. It is relatively unimportant who is in the Government. I am not opposed to any government because it is White. I am only opposed to one which is undemocratic. I do not like such expressions as " the All-Black Government," the African majority."
