Description: SAED:POLITICS:SHEBEENS:DRUM JUNE 1952 - Mr Drum Looks At The Tot SystemShould he be paid in Liquor? New bill plans to pay Transvaal Africans in liquor. What is the 'system'? In the Cape Province, particularly in the wine-growing areas, a large number of Coloured farm workers have part of their wages paid in wine instead of money. One of the resentments which promted Idi Amin to expel the Asians was the inviolabe state of Asian women. For generations Asian men had chosen Black brides, but it was a one way arrangement - until June this year when the first marriage between an African bridegroom and an Asian bride was celebrated in Gulu. Several VIP's attended, including Amin, the Indian High Commisioner and the Pakistani ambassador. There were only a few Asians let to witness the occasion. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

If I heard anyone call me such a name we fought. Sometimes i beat the offender and sometimes I got beaten. The battle for leadership between UNIP and ANC became a real war at Easter when fighting, reprisal raids and killing tore apart the uneasy peace of N.R. It wasn't only political people who were hurt, though. In the most savage of the Easter fighting a mob of about 30 attacked a peaceful home and three men were killed there.
