NEG T491SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:DRUM NOVEMBER 1956 Gatsha Buthelezi, whom Drum described as a rebel chief, will play a decisive role yet in Zululand.People who know what is going on in the native affairs Department say that one of the reasons why the Government has not yet recognized Gatsha formally as Chief of the Shenge Tribe, might well have been the article. Now, this government does many things I disapprove of, but in my opinion, would not be so naive as to reg

Description: . SAED:SOCIAL:DRUM FEBRUARY 1952Ð A Day In The Beach Ð-There are thousands of Africans on the Reef and in the country who have never seen the sea; but to Africans, Coloureds and Indians in Durban there is a huge salt swimming bath and a sandy beach that is free for all, and for sharks too! You can see the sharks all too well sporting themselves in the sea by the Umgeni River, and bathers must keep between strict limits if they donÕt want their feet chopped off! But that doesnÕt stop children running down to the beaches whenever they can, paddling, diving, riding on the waves and standing on their heads. People in Durban say they have plenty of problems, but the sea washes most of them away! (Photograph by Jurgen Schadeberg © BAHA) NEG 039 FRAME 19

Description: DM2008110406:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:APR 1964 - The Old Campaigner Starts A New Life. A lonely figure, Africa's only Nobel Prize winner, strides through his sugar cane lands on an inspection. As far as most of South Africa is concerned, Chief Albert Lutuli is the forgotten man. The Chief's banning and confinement orders expire in May. Lutuli's life has undergone a complete change. His life has been transformed from that of a bustling politician to a retired farmer and small businessman. At his age of 66 - when most men retire - the old campaigner has started a new life, a life of hard work on his several small undertakings. His day begins early in the morning and never ends before midnight. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
