A woman who just refuses to be bogged down by age is Mrs. Geraldine M. Spooner. At 83 she is one of the oldest Ð and liveliest Ð people in Phokeng, Rustenburg. And Rustenburg Ð the place of rest Ð is only about 104 old! She came to South Africa in 1915 with her late husband, the late Reverend Kenneth Egerton Spooner, to do missionary work among the Bafokeng. October 13, 1958 - the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. "Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused," he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of "Africa" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief. Topping Transvaal's junior is pretty Constance Molefe a 16 year old primary scholer from Orlando. She's fresh and young, energetic, a glutton for hard court practises, and shows remarkable ability for a girl of her age. Fortunate for Constance, she was born into a tennis family. Her father, Ralph, who is also her guide and coach, is a one -time holder with Grant Khomo the countries champ of the South African doubles title. Aggrinneth took to boxing last year to learn the art of self-defence. Recently she ran into a nest of thugs, but they beat her up leaving a cut under her right eye."Let them come one by one,"she said, "and lets fight it out with gloves". Aggrineth is now working hard in the gym to keep in good and ready form. But she is also challenging Winnie Mthembu, weightlifter, to a boxing bout, and Drum will arrange one next month. I've done all sort of jobs in my younger days, and at no stage have I felt that men were superior to me in any way. True, the African women is brought up under strict control, but that has nothing to do with what she decides to do for herself. That night at Johannesburg Social Centre when a tribute and farewell show was given for this Fr. Huddleston bloke. 'Twas a helluva big show that. Biggest for 1955. Also why they sang with such gusto and pep was because they recognised full well the part he had played in helping a Musicians Union to be born. Helluva tough birth too. Things are so tough for Unions, man. And this Union's been getting monies for musicians whose music were sold profitlessly overseas. See where we are with this Huddleston bloke?
