Description: SAED:CRIME:PERSONALITY:DRUM NOVEMBER 1953 Ð Confessions of an ex-gangster Ð Garrett Adams, one Ðtime hoodlum, burglar, dagga-addict and hired gunfighter has turned over a new leaf: Crime is not for him any more. He has learnt that crime does not pay. This is his own story of how he started off on the wrong road, what and who encouraged himÉ. And how a gangster feels when on the run. Dagga-smoking, turned Garrett AdamsÕs once innocent and laughing eyes into the sleepy, cunning eyes of a man who lives by violence and cruelty. .(Photograph by Drum Photographer ©Baileys Archives) NEG 285 FRAME 7

For four long years the Msomi gangster ruled Alexandra Township, killing, and robbing as they liked. How did they come into being? How did their leaders end in the death cell?... Msomi gunman 'Boston Tar Baby' Snyman tells the complete story. If a professional criminal were to tell youngsters that crime doesn't pay, even the skilled craftman like myself, kids might listen. That is why i decide to come clean. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

During the week-ends, they loaf around the locations, dressed in flashy American clothes. After World War II most of the worlds big cities had to face another war, trying to stop the crime wave caused by the young and unemployed. America had what was called, "The street with no name that runs across the States." Johannesburg was no exception. Sophiatown, generally considered the nucleus of all Reef crimes, spawned on to the Reef more gangs than any other Location. There were gang fights over girls. They even had the services of a Bachelor of Arts High school teacher and a matriculated student to write their love letters to the decent girls who drew their fancy. For the Americans tried to be respectable when they met respectable people. (Photograph by Bob Gosani Baileys Archive) township, we are

Description: DM2000080815:SAED:SOCIAL:MAR1959 - Teenage Gangsters Goes To WarD - They ought to be busy with their reading, writing and 'rithmetic. But that isn't their line of study. They're too busy getting clued up on dicing, smoking. And in some cased they're taking to real gang warfare. Youngsters with time heavy on their hands. The streets their main source of entertainment. What they seek is amusement. But there ay be others on the prowl for real trouble. And thus does a clash begin, often over a girl claimed by a gang. (Photograph by Peter Magubane Baileys Archive)

How it begins; Two groups of boys from different parts of a township meet on an open stretch of ground and have a go at each other with mealie cobs and watermelon skins, and with zinc lids as shields. It's just for kicks. This is the 'boys wil be boys' stage. But too often it leads to the formation of gangs, with the mealie cob giving way to the knife. Description: DM2002042207:SAED:SOCIAL:CRIME:NOV1952 - Gang War Crisis! - Bullet Corner. Active corner in gang war. A little while ago a gang made attempts to bump off Baby Face. Twenty shots were fired; no one was injured. As gang war rages this corner pinpoints itself as strategically important. Even before the present crisis it had a colourful history. It is the haunt of prostitutes, dagga smokers, hoodlums, etc. Recently a white drunk was stripped naked here. Despite notoriety, Bullet Corner is poorly policed. Because of expected attacks from rival gangs, local gangsters with headquarters close by keep vigilante watch. Two man pirade silently and unobtrusively and keep alert because of threat made on life of leader. Drum cameraman took this picture at considerable risk as gangsters present inteference by press, especially Drum, which they regard as menace to their activities. (Photograph by Bob Gosani BAHA)

Description: DM2002061106:GCPED:SOCIAL:PERSONALITY:CRIME:15NOV1960 - How I Became A Msomi Gangster - Boston demonstrates how his judo knowledge at times came handy when he was cornered by other gangsters. For four long years the Msomi gangster ruled Alexandra Township, killing, and robbing as they liked. How did they come into being? How did they operate? Why did thir leaders end in the death cell? ... Msomi gunman 'Boston Tar Baby' Snyman tells the complete story. If a proffessional criminal were to tell youngsters that crime doesn't pay, even the skilled craftsman like myself, kids might listen. That is why i decided to come clean. People refused to help us as they were afraid that any visit to me would be noticed by some thug who was waiting next to my office to see who came to talk. I had to get offices in Bree street to collect affidavits. The extent that Mathews had the people of Alexandra in his power came out in the affidavits.
