Description: NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:FEB 1954 Ð WhoÕs Who In The 1964 Election Fight ÐNCNC Leader Dr Michael Okpara. His party gives the impression of being bemused Òand a shadow of its former glory,Ó says the West African Pilot. The National Convention of Nigerian Citizens gives the impression of being smug, disorganized and bemused. The Action Group gives the appearance of being puzzled, atrophied and uncertain. The United PeopleÕs Party presents the image of ideological impotence and opportunism. The picture that small parties like the Dynamic Party, the Northern Elements Progressive Union and the United Middle-Belt Congress present is that of bewilderment, irresolution and drift. Description: SAED:POLITICS:SHEBEENS:DRUM JUNE 1952 - Mr Drum Looks At The Tot System Ð GREED for tots is summed up in this farm workerÕs expression. The tot is swallowed at one gulp. Should he be paid in Liquor? New bill plans to pay Transvaal Africans in liquor. What is the 'system'? In the Cape Province, particularly in the wine-growing areas, a large number of Coloured farm workers have part of their wages paid in wine instead of money. The wine is given in 'tots' several times a day. Usually if a worker doesn't take his tot, he gets nothing instead. Farmers say that the tot makes workers work better, and that they can't do without it. (Photograph by Jurgen Schadeberg © BAHA) NEG 104 FRAME 18

Description: DM2008060308:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:FEB 1963 Nkomo Release The Big Moment Joshua Nkomo steamed back into something like his old glory aboard the 7:35 a.m. from Bulawayo. About 2,000 ex-ZAPU supporters were at Salisbury Station to greet their ex-leader. Dozens of ex-ZAPU skin hats bobbed about in the crowd. And when the train rolled in and the familiar head poked out of a window wearing the daddy of all skin hats, the chanting of ex-ZAPU songs and chants could be heard blocks away. Coming from an organization that officially does not exist, it was a substantial display. (Photograph by Drum Photographer ©BAHA)

With the cry Theyre killing cats to make their hats, the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals declared war on Southern Rhodesians nationalists. Why? They claim there is evidence that Nationalist supporters in the cities are creeping up back alleys, stalking cats - to turn them into skin hats! Its just possible. Today, the skin hat has become the national emblem, and not only at home in London, in New York, at the United Nations, in the big capitals of Africa, the skin hat has become the symbol of the nation picking it out among the others. Horray for King Kong! Its London at last. Producer Leon Gluckman has spent worried weeks getting the play streamlined for London audiences. Its more slick and fast. has a lot of zing, too. Lemmy Special's fascinating kwela antics are mainly wasted in the show, for reasons best known to Arnorld Dover and Leon Gluckman. Description: DM2001022008:SAED:MUSIC:PERSONALITY:20MAR1969 - Dollar Brand Quitting Again 'No Scope Here' - Only nine months since his return to home town, Cape Town's renowned jazz pianist, Dollar Brand, has once again decided to pull up his roots and leave for the Continent. To many people, especially hardened jazz enthusiasts, his decision has come as a great shock. His return , they claim, gave Cape Town's jazz scene a new life but it may now slump back into non-existence. At the moment his busiest assignment is a composition he is writingfor the Danish Radio Orchastra. It is a piece for seven instruments which does he describes as a tone 'poem'.On his last visit to Copenhagen, Dollar arranged quite a number of works for the same orchestra, which perfomed them on television. Mr Moffat Mafekeng, of Paarl, is to ask Mr Vorster to allow his wife, Elizabeth, who was banished in 1959, to return to South Africa. Mrs Elizabeth Mafekeng was National President of the African Food and Canning Workers Union. She was told to go to Southey, a small village 72 miles from Vryburg. Mrs Mafekeng, howecer defied the order and fled to Basutoland. When I spoke to Mr Mafekeng at his home in Barborosa Street, in Paarl, last week, he told me that his wife's banishment order was due to to expire in October this year. But he pointed out that as his wife defied the order she is liable to be arrested as soon as she returned to South Africa. Mr Mafekeng said he would ask Mr Vorster to allow his wife to come back. He said that his wife had had a heart attack recently. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Security police swooped on the Orlando West home of a divorcee at midnight on friday and arrested a man for whom the police were looking at the time of the Rivonia raid in July last year. The man, Wilton Mkwayi, is now being held under the 90 day law. Arrested with him was Mrs Irene Kumalo, a Meadowlands Clinic midwife, in whose house Mkwayi was found. It is believed that the police made an intensive search for Mkwayi shortly after the Rivonia raid. Mkwayi was a member of the National executive of the African National Congress at the time of its banning and was the last of these leaders still at large.
