The birth of a baby is the greatest event in the world. Although it means an upheaval in the home, hard work and worry for the midwife and sometimes pain for the mother, when it is all over it brings new life and rejoicing. The midwifeÕs job is often a hard one, for most of her patients are poor African women with little equipment. Description: DM2000072609:SAED:SOCIAL:OCT1951 - Inside Johannesburg's Underworld - Every African on the Reef knows the miseries and terrors of the crime city; they know how it is to be imprisoned in their own homes, and not to dare to cross the road alone. They know how even in broad day light they maybe assaulted, robbed and stripped and yet have no means to retaliate; they know how even in their daily journey to and from work they run the risk of encountaring thieves, thugs and murderers. Everyone on the Reef has close ones who have been stabbed and murdered; and also everyone has a story to tell himself. The fear and misery which hangs over Johannesburg have already made the Golden City notorious for its Black Record of Crime. (Photograph Jurgen Schaderberg Baileys Archives) neg 019

From time to time government spokesmen try to paint a picture of happy, unworried life in the Bantustans which they have invented. But the murder, give them the lie. The Pondos were soon given a lesson in Masizaiphathe when they learnt that Botha had started appointing sub-chiefs, overlooking those who were opposed to his rule. The peasants decided they should orginise themselves. Those in the Bizana area met at Ndlovu Hill, and those in Lusikisiki met at Ngquza Hill.
