Description: . . NIGED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:FEB 1963 Ð Awolowo Is Charged With Treason ÐSome Came Smiling, plenty of smiles as some of the accused arrived in heavily guarded police vans. The trial of Chief Awolowo and 24 others began with high drama. On the first day, tension mounted. On the second, it flaredÉ No Nigerian outside the Criminal Investigation Department suspected that, on a day in November 1962, there would occur an event that would, in its significance and suddenness put the proceedings of the Coker Commission of Inquiry into the shade. And when the great event started to unfold, it did so with all the suspense of a slow-motion picture. ( Photograph by Matthew Faji Photographer ©BAHA)

Description: DM2008060254:EAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITIES:APR 1964 Inside Wha Wha Restriction Camp At the Perimeter Police Post, a smiling Nkomo turn to talk to Press Reporters while waiting0 for the arrival of camp officials to request entry into Wha Wha. The Southern Rhodesian government has its own remedy for nationalists whom they have singled out as thugs. The people are quietly hustled out of their homes in midnight raids and sent off to Wha, Wha, the lonely restriction camp in the bush no far from Gwelo, where 94 restrictees are detained 31 ZANU members, the rest supporters of the PCC. Wha Wha is a complex web of guard posts with the detainees stockade nestling in the middle. The idea is that nobody, unless checked out through the strictly controlled pass system, can penetrate the web. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)

Description: DM2008090807:EAED:SOCIAL:POLITICS:JUN 1962 - It Was Holy Week Slaughter - Riot Cops march in, armed to teeth, after Chifubu slaughter. That night three platoons of riot squad police, bristling firepower, rolled into Chifubu. But the Holy Week War had left it bloodiest mark. Two weeks later, no arrest had been made. The battle for leadership between UNIP and ANC became a real war at Easter when fighting, reprisal raids and killing tore apart the uneasy peace of N.R. It wasn't only political people who were hurt, though. In the most savage of the Easter fighting a mob of about 30 attacked a peaceful home and three men were killed there. Drum Photographer took this on the spot picture when police were making a raid. All over Johannesburg and the Golden Reef there are streets, corners and whole districts where law and order are openly flouted, and crime and violence is bred. Gangsters, liquor sellers, prostitues and thugs know that they can operate unmolested in these reserves of law-lesness. (Photographs by Jurgen Schaderberg Baileys Archives)
