Description: DM2000041029:GCP:SPORTS:29AUG1965 Ref's Double Trouble Day - Bully Springbok and FBS lock, Melody Madikane, breaks with the ball after a scrum against St. Cyprians. It was double day for the referee of the needle match between FABS and St Cyprians here at the weekend. Both sides lodged protests about his decisions after the match. When M. Mjuza went over to score for St Cyprians, he fouled the touchline but neither the referee nor the touch judge spotted this, so the referee awarded the try. The FABS captain protested to the referee, but later withdrew the complaint. In the closing minutes of the match, FABS forced a lineout near St Cyprians gole-line. H . Madikane took the ball cleanly but was prevented from scoring. W. Maku however, snatched the ball from an apparently offside position and scored. Description: DM2000041022:SAED:SPORT:SOCCER:PERSONALITY:JUL1955 - The Soccer Rebel - Steve 'Kalamazoo' Mokone, who became the only Pretoria soccerite to represent South Africa, by rebelling against parents! Mutiny in the Mokone family.! What made Steve revolt against the wishes of his parents? Paul Mokone and hi wife Emily, parents of the now popular footballer, Steve Mokone know the answer. It wasn't a serious problem, but to their on, it meant the breaking point betweeen him and his ambition. He had decided that soccer would be his sport. But Paul was inspired by rugby in his young days, and had decided that his son would one day be a brilliant exponent of the game. His wife on the other hand, had her own particular taste. Tennis, she thought, was the best game in the world and she saw a chance for her son to excel in it. There was a clash of opinions. Little Steve obidient in other matters, couldn't just please either of his parents. (Photograph by Drum Photographer BAHA)
