Description: DM2000012516:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:BOXING:SEP1957 - Treason: End of Round One - To keep fit, Nelson Mandela, solicitor, was at Jerry Moloi's boxing gym at Orlando every evening. He's shadow-sparring with Moloi (right) a professional featherweight. As the biggest case in South Africa's history lumbered to the end of its first stage this August 1957, the 156 accused men and women wondered how many of them would be back in court again. The 156 national leaders had first appeared at a preparatory examination into treason at the end of 1956, in the specially constructd court at the Drill Hall, Johannesburg; they had spent their lives in and out of court for most of 1957; and they could now see the possibility of the same prospect for the third calendar year, 1958, if they were committed for trial in the Supreme Court. Description: SAED:SPORTS:PERSONALITY:DRUM FEBRUARY 1952 Ð First African Lady Golfer - Mary Mofokeng Issues challenge To golfers of her sex. Mary playing a game of cards. Mary MofokengÕs first ambitions didnÕt have a thing to do with golf, in fact they didnÕt have a thing to do with sport generally. Born at Harrismith, Orange Free State, 26 years ago, she was, unfortunately parentless at an early age; but sympathetic relations thought she should become a school teacher. So they sent her to a Natal Institution for a domestic Science course, which she completed, but has never found much use for ever since; for , instead for practicing domestic science she joined a Johannesburg dry cleaning factory as an ordinary hand, and still in the dry cleaning business, this time as a marker. This is surely one act that could pack any hall if made permanet. If is the word. These songstresses did this act to give the lucky audience their 'Christmass Box'. For then days Accra, and the whole of Ghana, played host to over 300 men and women from more than 25 African countries who had gathered for the conference. Their subject was: The Furure of Africa. The delegates were at the conference for two reasons. To work out how best Africa could be freed from colonialism and imperialism and to set the foundations for a Union of Independent African States. Accra's Community Centre Hall was crowded to hear the opening address by Dr Kwame Nkrumah. (Photograph by Christian Gbagbo Baileys Archive)

Poet Ingrid Jonker with her five year old daughter, Simmone. Ingrid describes her daughter's birth as 'one of the great experiences in my life.' When I am asked to talk about my poetry I sometimes feel like answering that poetry should really speak for itself. But I know that this is a bit unreal or perhaps asking too much. Poets speak the words, and the ideas, the thoughts and dreams of everyone. The difference is that they use these words and ideas in a way that, when succesful, is heightened, sharper, clearer, more piercing than in ordinary speech. Now let me say something about my poem 'Die Kind' (The Child), about which so much has been said. Go back to the days in March 1960, when blood flowed in this land. Description: DM2000012407:SAED:POLITICS:PERSONALITY:NOV58 - Treason Trial Halts - Nelson Mandela, Aziz Pahad and Winnie Mandela outside the court. October 13, 1958 - the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. "Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused," he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of "Africa" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief. Description: DM2000020210:SAED:PERSONALITY:POLITICS:NOV 1958 – Treason Trial Halts – Nelson Mandela with Moses Kotane (left) beam out of the court in seconds. For the moment there is nothing that can worry them. October 13, 1958 the mild, cloudy Pretoria morning on which the most sensational of things happened for the 91 men and women of all races facing a charge of high treason. Mr Pirow, leader of the Crown team at the trial, rose to his feet, touched a colleague who was still addressing the court, and brought the microphone to his mouth. \"Your Lordship, I withdraw the indictment against the accused,\" he said in his hoarse voice. The height of the trial's drama had come. Up in the packed non-white gallery, black faces lit up and swung round to take swift looks at the judges, still wondering if they had heard right. Out in the street, where spectators and photographers were pressing on the accused, shouts of \"Africa\" rang high and firm, victory handshakes spelled the day's relief. Few African women ever reach the tennis lime light even if they do, its usually at a late age. But there is today a steady flow of girl learners, under expert guidance, and we can expect a tennis boom for our ladies in the near future. Topping Transvaal's junior is pretty Constance Molefe a 16 year old primary scholer from Orlando. She's fresh and young, energetic, a glutton for hard court practises, and shows remarkable ability for a girl of her age. Fortunate for Constance, she was born into a tennis family. Her father, Ralph, who is also her guide and coach, is a one -time holder with Grant Khomo the countries champ of the South African doubles title. Her mother, Rachel was a talented player in her days, but has had to forfeit tennis for housework. (Photograph by Jurgen Schadeberg @ Baileys Archives) neg 515

Description: DM2000020904:SAED:WOMEN:POLITICS:SEP1952 - Is A Women's Place, The Home? - Mrs G Nxumalo. Should wives go out to social events and meetings with their husbands, or should they stay at home to look after their family and house? Mrs Grace Nxumalo, 49 year old former prison wardress and tennis star player in her young days, now driving a lorry as a coal merchant at Pimville, says: A women's place is where she wants it. I've done all sort of jobs in my younger days, and at no stage have I felt that men were superior to me in any way. True, the African women is brought up under strict control, but that has nothing to do with what she decides to do for herself. I believe a woman should work hard and play hard like anyone else; in this way not only does she help to augment the family's income, but she keeps her body and mind fresh to face her family responsibilities: she has as much right to be where her husband is as the husband has a right to be where she is (Photograph by

It all started with the huge, compelling party poster splashed magnetically over Johannesburg. 'Township Jazz' at the Selbourne Hall. The poster also carried a controversy, sensitive as a winter blister. There would be shows for Euros only and shows for Non-Euros only. All this would take place at the Johannesburg City Hall. There the music, song and dace of the townships would be presented by the Union of South African Artists. This Union fights to get better and wider horizons for the Non-White artists. So if this Union claims to champion the cause of us blacks, why the hack should they go in for segregation and seperate audiences and black dates and white dates. No man, you don't see the point. The Union's got somewhere if they've got the City Hall for this. They're bringing out of the dark, township halls some of the artists who'd
